Our Lady of Seven Sorrows

img_0209

The saints that watch over those who enter the sanctuary are not the only statued saints that are housed in the church. Two statues of note are now on display in the Parish Archives. These two statues, once housed in the sanctuary, stood watched over the church as can be seen in the historical photo to the right. (Note the location of the Pieta off to the right hand side of the church)

Our Lady of Seven Sorrows

Our Lady of Seven Sorrows

The most striking of the two large statues that now  greet you as you enter the archives, is that of Our Lady of Seven Sorrows. This classic depiction of Our Lady of Seven Sorrows, shows the blessed Virgin Mary weeping, her heart  being pierced by seven daggers each representing one of the seven sorrows in her life.
  The seven sorrows are:
1.The Prophecy of Simeon over the Infant Jesus
2. The Flight into Egypt of the Holy Family
3. The loss of the child Jesus for Three Days
4. The meeting of Jesus and Mary along the Way of the Cross
5. The Crucifixion, Mary stands at the foot of the cross
6. Jesus is removed from the cross where Mary receives the dead body of Jesus (see the Pieta)
7. The burial of Jesus
St. John

St. John

The next statue is that of St. John the Apostle. It is from John’s Gospel that we read the Passion of Jesus on Good Friday. It is fitting therefore that between the statue of St. John and Our Lady of Seven Sorrows, there is a large cross.  This scene reminds one of the Twelfth Station “Jesus Dies on the Cross”. According to John’s Gospel: “When Jesus saw his mother at the foot of the Cross and, standing near her, the disciple whom he loved, he said to his Mother: Woman, behold your son. After that he said to the disciple: Behold your mother. Having tasted the vinegar, Jesus said: It is finished. Then, crying in a loud voice, he said: Father, into your hands I commend my spirit. And, bowing his head, he gave up his spirit.”
